What is the PTA?

What is a PA/PTA?

Parent Associations (PAs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) are school-based organizations open to all parents of children currently attending a New York City public school. The PA/PTA is a primary vehicle for parents to get involved in their children’s schools.

How do I join my school’s PA/PTA?

All parents are automatically members of their school’s PA/PTA. There are no pre-qualifications required to participate in a school’s PA/PTA. There is no need to join the PA/PTA.

The term parent includes the student’s parent or guardian, or any person in a parental or custodial relationship to the student.

For more specific information on how to get involved, ask your school Principal or Parent Coordinator.

What is the role of the PA/PTA?

The PA/PTA helps parents become involved in their children’s education, share ideas, and enrich their school communities. Each PA/PTA develops its own bylaws, elects officers, and holds regular meetings. While the specific roles of PA/PTAs vary, their responsibilities include:

  • Electing parent members to serve on School Leadership Teams and Community Education Councils

  • Conducting outreach to get other parents involved in school life

  • Supporting school activities like Parent-Teacher Conferences, open houses and curriculum nights

  • Holding fundraising activities to benefit the educational, social and cultural programs in the school

Chancellor's Regulation A-660

The Chancellor's Regulation A-660 (CR A-660) governs all aspects of PA/PTAs including elections, finances, conflicts of interests, grievances, fundraising activities and events. It is essential that all members of a school's PA/PTA board read the CR A-660 and are familiar with the overview of the regulations.

The Chancellor's Regulation page has the CR A-660 in all nine covered languages.

PTAlink’s mission is to improve the quality of education for all children in the New York City public school system by making parent organizations stronger and more effective.

SLT (School Leadership Team) Minutes 9-17-24

SLT (School Leadership Team) Minutes 9-17-24

The meeting began at 5:30PM. Mrs. Ramos checked the attendance and went over some of the meeting protocols.  We finalized the dates for the next two upcoming SLT meetings.

First PTA meeting is 9/19, they will be doing elections to vote on which parents will be part of the SLT. We will decide on which students will be part of the SLT committee this week.

Principal’s Remarks:

Mr. Hoogenboom will give everyone access to the CEP- that’s the original purpose of the SLT. Everyone will be able to get read only access.

We had an incredibly smooth opening thanks to programming. We did not have issues like rooms being double booked, teachers programmed in the wrong place, and there were less holes in programs.

Drills- we must notify families through an email blast when there will be any drills.

Overall, we had a graduation rate of 90% that is an extraordinary achievement for a large comprehensive high school.  More students will pick Lincoln.  We went on several college tours last year and will continue this school year.

Literacy push- Jen will be speaking on a panel at the principals’ meeting tomorrow about understanding the importance of literacy across disciplines.  We have a literacy team that consists of teachers from English, History, Science, Special Ed, ELL, and a librarian.

MTSS: Students are selected for Literacy/Math MTSS based on their 7th and 8th grade state exam scores. Students flip between Math and Literacy.

New curriculum: second year of the new Math curriculum, not just Algebra but also Geometry.  Mr. Capizzo is now teaching Geometry to bring an experienced voice to the geometry team to help support the new curriculum.

New Biology Regents this year, it is no longer Living Environment. There is also a

new Earth Science Regents. They changed the reference tables so hopefully this will be a little clearer. Finally, what are the keys to learning- social emotional supports are crucial for student success- if you don’t feel good about yourself- if you don’t feel safe- you aren’t going to learn well. If students feel safe, cherished, valued, then our teachers will be able to teach.

Looking forward to a great year!

UFT Remarks

Mr. Capizzo requested the school calendar. School calendar will be finalized and sent out this week.

Mrs. Ramos said the 9th grade students are very good this year. They are more mature compared to last year’s ninth grade.

College Office- merging Naviance and common app so we can start meeting with students.  Currently meeting with seniors that we met with as juniors.

Mr. Capizzo said students are already asking for college recommendation letters.

PTA Remarks:

First PTA meeting will be 9/19/24 at 6PM

The first bake sale will be in October, we are waiting on a date with Mr. Robinson and Sheree Williams, our Parent Coordinator.

The PTA is waiting for the school calendar to plan more fun nights

SLT (School Leadership Team) Minutes 10-22-24

The meeting began at 5:30PM. Mrs. Ramos checked the attendance and went over some of the meeting protocols and norms.  The minutes were accepted. We finalized the dates for the remaining SLT meetings.

Principal’s Remarks:

The original purpose of the school leadership team was to help develop the CEP. That has been taken out of our hands as the CEP has become very prescribed.  Mr. Hoogenboom will make sure his secretary gives read access of the CEP to the SLT members.

Two areas of focus this year are Illustrative Math and literacy.

Monday we were visited by three people from the superintendent’s office to look at our literacy protocols- the big push with literacy is for every student to be more comfortable reading- the new Regents in Science and History have become more about reading comprehension than content.

Jen Baumfeld formed a literacy committee with members of each department, including ENL and special ed teachers- we’ve come up with words that every student should understand based on common academic language found on Regents exams. The literacy team also created universal annotation skills and a literacy toolkit to help with cross discipline and disciplinary specific strategies.

We created MTSS classes multi-tiered systems of support because not all students learn the same. Tier 1 is core instruction, Tier 2 students need extra help, but you can probably provide it in the classroom through scaffolds, Tier 3 students need extra assistance in an additional support class. We created five sections of MTSS literacy lab and Math lab.

The three people that came to observe our literacy practices are thrilled at where we are in the implementation process. They always want us to get better, but we have a higher baseline than other schools.

We had a visit today by the Math coach, there was an article about difficulty with implementing the new Math curriculum.  It is very difficult to implement a new curriculum and our teachers should be applauded for doing the difficult work, we have a high baseline and it’s a tribute to our teachers and their willingness to try.

This Thursday is ENL Family night, on Saturday afternoon we have a Halloween event at school for the community.  Different clubs set up different events in each classroom.  This Friday we have an honor roll celebration, celebrating the 9th graders passing all their classes with an 80 or above.

On Tuesday there’s a 9th grade field day, tomorrow Wed Oct 23, new teachers participate in LEAF intervisitation. Today and Thursday we had visits from middle schools, and we hope they apply to Lincoln.  We want more students that want to come to Lincoln rather than students that are filling empty seats.  We are still fighting to get our third X-ray scanner back. We still have two, but we really should have three.

UFT Remarks:

Mr. Capizzo said everything is going well on the teacher side. We do hav a lot of new teachers this year and he is happy we are providing them with LEAF. He also mentioned the Key Club food drive.  You can begin donating next week until the middle of November.

Mrs. Ramos agreed that LEAF is helpful.  The group came to visit her class last month.  Mrs. Ramos is also one of our college coordinators. She mentioned that college applications are in full swing. CUNY and SUNY applications just became free as of yesterday.  We have a great senior English 7 team, so they started working on the applications in class.

Student Remarks:

Emily mentioned that the clubs are open to all students. Club menus are available, and they can go to Ms. Dragone’s office with any questions.

The four middle school visits were all successful

Friday is the Breast Cancer Awareness Football game and tribute for Christian.

Sunday is the Breast Cancer Awareness walk.

Nov 1st is homecoming.

Thursday will be ENL family night.

PTA Remarks:

Mrs. Domenech let us know our first bake sale was a success on October 18th. Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

Ms. Porter did an awesome job; Ms. Porter’s mom helped her. The students enjoyed the bake sale.

PTA is waiting for more days from Ms. Panday and Mr. Robinson to schedule additional events.

We will have something during the open house on November 13th.

Mrs. Domenech reminded us to wear pink on Friday and Saturday

SLT (School Leadership Team) Minutes 11-19-24

The meeting began at 5:30PM. Mrs. Ramos checked the attendance and went over some of the meeting protocols and norms.

The minutes were accepted.

Principal’s Remarks:

Mr. Hoogenboom reminded the committee about access to the CEP. The request is in with central. By the next meeting all of us will have read access to the CEP.

Tomorrow is the principal’s performance evaluation; the Deputy Superintendent comes to look at what is going on in the school. It is usually a breakdown of effective and developing ratings.

Mr. Hoogenboom prepared for the PPO and realized how proud he is of everything going on at Lincoln.

The Girls Tennis team won the city championship.

Students in SO collected 41 pints of blood at our blood drive- 123 people participated.

We had a 90% graduation rate last year and our achievement gap is one of the smallest. African American students have a 94% graduation rate, and our white students have an 83%. Many of our white students are ELLs.  Our SWDs had an 82% graduation rate. We still must get those 10% to graduate.

We are doing a great job with safety and security, decrease in incidences over last year.

IM Math- our teachers are doing great.

Our Literacy Content Experts Meeting blew everyone away.

Our teacher PD is amazing.

This Friday, there will be no students in the school so we can have PD before Parent teacher conferences.

We told the parents they can send their children to school if necessary.

Our football team lost to South Shore and are no longer in the playoffs. It was an emotional last game, but we pick ourselves up and move on. We are onto winter sports. Mr. Hoogenboom is proud of the resiliency he sees in our teachers and students everyday. It makes him feel blessed to be the principal of Lincoln. Mr. Hoogenboom reminded us about the anniversary of the Gettysburg address. We want to create wonderful citizens that can make this world a better place.

UFT Remarks:

Mr. Capizzo said teaching is going well. The UFT is doing a book club that gives CTLE credits. It is a good opportunity to get the credits in.

PTA donated $200 to the food drive.

The Key Club is volunteering at the Sea and Salt Mission. They will be donating food during Christmas and will hold a coat drive in December.

The students give out canned foods and non-perishables.

Ms. Domenech asked if the Key Club will be willing to work with PTA.

Mr. Capizzo also mentioned that we are getting ready for parent teacher conferences. Mrs. Ramos let the committee know that our seniors are working on their college applications.

There are a lot of students trying to get CUNY and SUNY completed while it is still free. We are trying to finish those up so we can get as many kids as possible to college or trade school. Mrs. Ramos reminded us that our next meeting is December 10th.

Student Remarks:

There will be an ARISTA fundraiser with cocoa and cookies to raise money.

Parents can make appointments with teachers via email for Parent Teacher conferences.

Mrs. De Coteau asked a question about meeting with students for college. Mrs. Ramos checked and let Mrs. De Coteau know that Mrs. Kelly is his college counselor.

PTA Remarks:

There was a question about whether students can play both football and basketball. Mr. Hoogenboom said any student can play any sport and should see Ms. Ebeid in RM 127 or the principal in RM 135 for more information.

Ms. Domenech let us know we had an open house on November 13th. There were a lot of parents that came and are already on the PTA at their child’s middle school.

During Thursday’s PTA meeting the parents voted on having students not attend school on Friday prior to Parent-Teacher conferences.

There were guest speakers at the meeting as well. Mr. Molina, the senior advisor and Photography teacher and Mr. Cruz. There was a senior questionnaire from Mr. Molina. A link was sent out for parents to complete.

Friday was the second in-person bake sale. Mrs. Domenech felt she was interfering with Ms. Williams’ job and metro card distribution; she asked to use RM 131 next time.

The next PTA meeting is on the December 19th. Mrs. Domenech asked Mr. Robinson for future dates.

The last bake sale was for the grit and hope awards, and we made enough to buy gifts.

Ms. Domenech is sending out an email to encourage anyone to come to a meeting and to post PTA events.

SLT (School Leadership Team) Minutes 12–10-24

The meeting began at 5:30PM. Mrs. Ramos checked the attendance and went over some of the meeting protocols and norms. The minutes were accepted.

Principal’s Remarks:

Mr. Hoogenboom talked about the SPED content meeting we had today at Lincoln. Various teachers and APs from the superintendency came to Lincoln. The meeting took place in our library. They visited classes, it was nice for our teachers to show off. It makes us think about what a good class looks like.

Most of our classes are students wrestling with the material instead of teachers putting on a show.

We reviewed our graduation rate- there is a gap, but we are working to close that gap.

The Nina Ambassadors came up to the library to do a presentation.

Nina and the students that work as ambassadors help the over all tone of the building.

We are in the holiday season; this is a time of celebration and a time to recognize those that may not be able to celebrate.

During this time of deprivation, Mr. Hoogenboom wants all our faculty members and students to know that there can be beauty and friendship in other forms. Happiness can come from a pleasant conversation with a friend. Focus on the meaning of the holiday season.

Everyone should have gotten an email giving you read only rights to the CEP.

There are 5 priorities.

UFT Remarks:

Mrs. Ramos let everyone know we are changing the January meeting from January 14, 2025 to January 7, 2025.

Mr. Capizzo mentioned spreading cheer. He talked about the food drive at the Salt and Sea mission near John Dewey High School. The students set up shop to handout food. It was nice to help the community

FAFSA night is January 14th. We have the students creating their FAFSA IDs.

68% applied to college.

The Winter Showcase is this Thursday in the Auditorium from 5:30-7:30.

Student Remarks:

The Band and Chorus will start the performance on Thursday before the performance by the production class.

There is an MBSK scholarship basketball game this Friday, December 13th in the gym.

Lincoln is hosting an all-club potluck- exclusive to club members and club advisors,

Everyone is encouraged to bring food 12/18 after period 9.

PTA Remarks:

Mrs. Domenech was invited to a meeting with the superintendent for Priority 2- she was the only parent speaking besides another parent from Fort Hamilton. Mrs. Domenech talked about how she was looking at high schools for her son and compared Lincoln to Grady- Lincoln was very bright and not only had a better tone, but the programs were better.

She found many differences between the SPED programs in Grady and Lincoln as well.

Other schools do not make the parents feel welcome the way Lincoln does.

Mrs. Domenech talked about all the programs we have at Lincoln that many other schools do not know about. In the priority 2 meeting, they spoke about the no kill shelter, North Shore Animal League, Nina made an appearance.

Fort Hamilton was impressed at how well-informed Lincoln families are about the lock down drills. Our parents get a text message and an email.

The PTA would like to see more engagement with parents and teachers.

We are over our goal for our “Poppin popcorn” fundraiser. We keep raising it a little at a time. We have $148 to go.

This Friday we are having our monthly bake sale- if anyone feels like baking and bringing in some goods, please feel free.

SLT (School Leadership Team) Minutes 1-7-25

The meeting began at 5:30PM. Mrs. Ramos checked the attendance and went over some of the meeting protocols and norms. The minutes were accepted.

Principal’s Remarks:

Mr. Hoogenboom mentioned the Polar Vortex and the tough winter we are having with a lot of illnesses.

He also let the committee know about the visit from the animal hospital coming to work with our Vet Sci students. We are having an internship celebration on Friday with the people that sponsor our internship program, and students will receive a stipend for their work.

A group from central in February is coming to look at our literacy practices. Literacy is also important in Social Studies and Science not just English. Ironically in English it’s a little bit easier because we all grew up with a standard narrative arc, Science and Social Studies do not have that arc- it takes a special skill to read in Science and Social Studies- we are recognizing that and central is recognizing that.

UFT Remarks:

Mrs. Procida informed the committee that PD on January 27th is still up in the air. We are not sure if it will be remote or in person. As of now, we are coming into school unless the new chancellor decides to make it remote.

Report cards will be distributed on either January 24th or January 28th.

Memorial Sloan Kettering is back in network. Optical and dental are getting better.

Mr. Capizzo reminded the committee that marking period 3 is ending next Friday. He spoke to Mr. Robinson about MP 4. The time frame was too tight for the fall semester.

Mrs. Ramos let the committee know that the ELA Regents will be on Tuesday January 21st. All our junior first time test takers except for beginner ELLs will sit for the exam.

FAFSA night is next Tuesday 1-14-25 from 5:30-7:30PM

Ms. Fabbricatore is having auditions for Mean Girls, see her in RM 227 during periods 4-8.

Emilie let us know we have a new Minecraft club.

Mark added that Regents week is coming up and the schedules for testing will be coming out soon. Students that have College Now will start new College Now classes.

Next PTA meeting is Thursday January 16th.

Mrs. De Coteau and Mrs. Domenech reminded the group about the Applebee’s breakfast fundraiser- $15 per person aiming for Saturday in March. It must coincide with the football banquet. It will take place at the Applebee’s in Sheepshead Bay on Emmons Ave.
